If you haven’t heard about Flytographer yet – keep reading! You need to know about this amazing service that is guaranteed to turn your holidays into beautiful memories.
Do you ever wish there were more photos of you from your holiday? And not just any photos – decent ones. The one’s that make you think ‘I should really make an album’.
It’s an unwritten rule that I, Rachel, take all the photos when we are on holiday. Seriously, if Tiernan had Instagram, I’d be his Instagram Wife. Camera’s are my gadget; even if I’m still learning what all the buttons are for. Photography is a real source of joy for me. I just wish I managed to get into more shots. Ones that weren’t long arm selfies because we forgot the screw on attachment that allows us to connect the camera to the tripod (yes, that’s happened).
Or perhaps you’re not super comfortable in from of the camera. Need someone who can make you feel at ease because they absolutely know what they are doing. I’m a menace when it comes to being photographed. I very rarely like myself in photos so I will inevitably pull some kind of concoction onto my face. Only the most sympathetic of directors could possibly deal with that!
Enter Flytographer* a little, starred bookmark I’ve had in my tabs since they launched in late 2013. Just sitting there, waiting for the opportune moment to be pursued. The concept is truly brilliant – bring together local photographers and travellers to capture holiday moments at the destination.
And finally, for our ‘big trip’ to New Zealand we finally gave it ago!
After you have requested the availability of photographers in your holiday destination, you are asked to complete a short questionnaire about your shoot preferences. Things like how comfortable you are with the camera, when and where you want to shoot, any ‘must-take’ photos and anything else that needs consideration. You are also asked to send in a photo of yourself so the photographer can recognise you.
Being the needy subjects we are, we left most of the details up to the photographer, but I requested some colonial style architecture. Auckland really came to life as a city in the late Victorian period. This means lots of weatherboard villas and other beautiful buildings.
Our photographer, Jessica, suggested meeting at the Northern Club at 7 am. Flytographer then created what they call a Shoot Scoop, a quick info card with all the key info on – photographer’s name and contact number, time we were to meet, location and our specific shoot requests.
It was a grey old day in the middle of the summer – quite typical for Auckland, actually. Keeping in touch by text, we met up with Jessica 10 minutes before the shoot to quickly discuss a plan. She was immediately a delight; encouraging us to speak up if we wanted or give us plenty of direction (yes, please). She’s a wedding, portrait and fashion photographer in Auckland by day. Having moved to New Zealand from Peru over 15 years ago, she’s pretty savvy with the destination.
Oh! And this is why you need a local photographer: even though I am originally from Auckland, I would not have thought to stage a photo shoot whilst walking up and down Waterloo Quadrant next to the University of Auckland. The result was a set of photos that were meaningful by accident. You can’t write this stuff, guys!
You can get or as much or as little direction as you need with a Flytographer photographer. Jessica told us where to stand, what she planned to get in the frame, when to hold out hands, when to look at each other or away. She did what it took to get a great photo. ‘She’s getting away!’ Tiernan yelled as she trotted into a side road, behind some parked cars, to get the right angle. It was exactly what we needed. The proof is in the pudding, really.
When we got back to my parents’ house where we were staying we couldn’t stop talking about how fantastic the 30-minute session had been. My confidence was on the up. The next morning a sample photo was sent through and we had the full set by the evening. Flytographer commits to sending your photos through within 5 days so your photos are waiting in your email inbox when you arrive home from holiday.
Our shoot ended up being quite posed. It just suited the places we were going. Flytographer was born out of a desire to take those candid, snapshots of moments that happen as you explore a new place. So if you are looking for some more experiential photos taken in a documentary style they can absolutely provide that. I am already thinking about a shoot in New York City where the camera is a fly on the wall… I’m losing myself again.
I envision Flytographer would be a perfect service to capture a surprise engagement or a honeymoon. Special moments that need special photos! But it’s such excellent value and designed for all kinds of vacations that it isn’t too extravagant for a vacation with family or friends. After receiving these photos, I’m not sure a photo taken by setting the camera to timer and running is going to cut it for me anymore.
The whole time we were laughing. Awkwardly at first and then more and more genuinely. Because it was the best of fun. And as we became more relaxed, the photos got better. You’ve got to agree – we look like we’re having fun, right? When you feel good, you look good (believe it or not, it’s not the other way around). Jessica made us feel awesome. I think I have convinced Tiernan to start a new travel ritual! We’ll be visiting Flytographer again; you can be sure of that.
